Χρησιμοποιείται για τον αρωματισμό φαγητών, όπως κρεατικών και ψαριών, σε σάλτσες και μαρινάδες αλλά και ως αφέψημα.
Η θυμόλη που περιέχεται έχει αντισηπτική δράση και αποτελεί το κυρίως συστατικό πολλών εμπορικών σκευασμάτων για την πλύση του στόματος. Η θυμόλη έχει αποδειχτεί επίσης αποτελεσματική στην καταπολέμηση των μυκήτων που συχνά μολύνουν τα νύχια των ποδιών. Αποτελεί επίσης ενεργό συστατικό σε κάποια φυτικά σκευάσματα χωρίς οινόπνευμα, για την απολύμανση των χεριών. Το ρόφημα από το θυμάρι μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθείγια τη θεραπεία του βήχα και της βρογχίτιδας.

It is used to flavor foods, such as meat and fish, sauces and marinades, but also as a decoction.
The thymol, which is contained in it, has antiseptic activity and it is the main ingredient of many commercial mouthwash preparations. Thymol has also been shown to be effective at fighting off fungi, which they often infect the toenails. It is also an active ingredient in some alcohol-free herbal preparations, for hand disinfection. Thyme decotion can be used to treat cough and bronchitis.
